The recent earthquake that affected big parts of Turkey and Syria was not simply a terrible natural disaster, but also has complex social and political implications. ICE is extremely grateful to have had the chance to organise an online session to learn more about the situation, thanks to our Turkish guest hosts Betül and Yunus.
Not only did we gain deeper insights into discussions about root causes and consequences, but we also learned surprising facts about the superiority of Central Asian nomadic homes compared to classic refugee tents. Finally, we found out about the challenges of donating or providing support to people in need.
We like to thank all participating schools and students for their passion and concern and willingness to help and educate themselves on global issues and we hope that we can continue to make current affairs and world events more accessible to Hong Kong youth!
Dialogue: Is it Just an Earthquake?
Our Turkish guests will share about the reality of living in Turkey, the possible reasons behind the high death rate after the recent earthquake and how this disaster may impact future experiences for people living in Turkey. Our guests will raise various concerns that the Turkish community has and share how Hong Kong people can provide help to their families and friends back at home.
In ICE, we aim to facilitate understanding between cultures and communities through authentic dialogue. We are holding a special workshop discussing the latest situation in Turkey and providing different perspectives on the earthquake.
